Monday Night Kirtan

Sacred Mountain welcomes Monday Night Community Kirtan to our weekly mix of events. This group has a long history in the Burlington area, regularly bringing locals of all stripes and ages together to join voices and instruments in a joyful outpouring of love and devotion in celebration of the divine presence within us all. It is a by-donation event; proceeds directly support the wallah of the week and help cover the cost of the space. Bringing instruments, friends and Prasad (food to share after kirtan) is encouraged.

Monday Night Community Kirtan is sponsored by the Vermont-based Call and Response Foundation, a non-profit devoted to bringing the healing power of sacred sound to all, in partnership with “Yogi P” Patrick McAndrew, a local wallah, and The Bhakti Beat, an international kirtan news blog.

What is Kirtan?

Kirtan is an ancient sacred practice centered around call-and-response chanting, in which a leader (the “wallah”) calls out a mantra or phrase and the participants respond. Kirtan is a group practice, and the lines between caller and responder blur as the chanting proceeds, often escalating into an ecstatic crescendo where music and voices merge. It is a primary practice of bhakti yoga, the yoga of love and devotion, which originated thousands of years ago in India and is being resurrected around the world in step with the rise in popularity of yoga. It is open to all; no experience
nor religious belief is required. Participants experience the effects of kirtan in diverse ways, from deeply meditative to ecstatically blissful.
